Community Outreach
We accomplish our mandate of “protecting and restoring wild fish habitat in two ways:
- Through the Interpretive Centre along the waterfront, Seaside Nature Park, and
- Through participation in a variety of community events that take place throughout the year.
Reaching out to people through events is a key way to increase awareness of the work of streamkeepers, the challenges, and the results.
Each year, we participate in events such as The River Never Sleeps Festival, the Brant Geese Festival, Family Day at the Qualicum Beach Museum and Beach Day in Qualicum Beach.
This helps to start conversations about water management and the many challenges that salmon face throughout their life cycle.
Our displays vary, but include the “Salmon Wheel of Life” (above right) some of our scientific measurement instruments, and our most recent one, an ocean warming demonstration.
Hands on learning is the best way to illustrate our message, and we priorise events which have a learning focus and reach young people. Featured image at top of page shows beach seining (2024).
