Expanding Plant Coverage

Little Qualicum River Estuary Regional Conservation Area (LQRECA) – our latest work party took place on Thursday, October 9 when nine volunteers and our Cultural Monitor, Kris from the Qualicum First Nation, worked together to plant 55 more native plants on the spit.

The plants consisted of 10 large Shore Pine, 5 Garry Oak, 10 Nootka Rose, 10 snowberry and 20 willows…the latter were placed on the bank to see if improved bank stabilization and shade could be achieved.

With rain in the forecast, this is a good time to let the new plants become established and add to the steadily expanding plant coverage on this important salmon estuary and sensitive archeological site.

The work was carried out with the financial support of the Raymond James Canada Foundation and the Regional District of Nanaimo, and assisted by the Qualicum First Nation.
