Protecting the watersheds requires periodic mapping of the streams and tributaries to assess habitat quality, barriers to fish access and identigy opportunities for future enhancement projects. Since Grandon and Beach Creeks have not been mapped for over twenty years, a two year project is underway with financial support from the RDN and the Pacific Salmon Foundation, and technical support by Weaver Technical Corporation with Streamkeeper volunteer assistance.
The project includes ground truth mapping of the streams, using GPS tracking on the ground. Habitat features are documented and GPS waypoints established. Weaver Technical will use the GPS data to map out the watercourses, for distribution and use by all stakeholders.
The project was initiated in 2024 with the mapping of Grandon Creek, and will continue through 2025 on Beach Creek and possibly Whiskey Creek.
