Spawning

Our local streams have been suffering from increasing peak water volumes in winter months, due in part to the effects of climate change and to human upstream activity.  These increased water flows have resulted in more bank erosion and the resulting damage to salmon spawning gravel beds.  Over the past decade, several projects have been undertaken to improve spawning pools in both Beach and Grandon Creeks.

A 2023 project on Beach Creek saw many volunteers carrying gravel and river rocks down into the stream, placing them in a sheltered pool with good tree cover.  In addition, plantings along the bank were placed to reduce erosion and provide shade.  More plantings are planned for 2024.

Grandon Creek has been the site of several spawning pool projects in the lower section over the past decade.  While several still exist, the challenge of high water flows and the deposit of large woody debris in the stream have resulted in major modification of the design …
