Protecting the watersheds requires periodic mapping of the streams and tributaries to assess habitat quality, barriers to fish access and identify opportunities for future enhancement projects. Since Grandon and Beach Creeks had not been mapped for over twenty years, a two year project was undertaken.
Thanks to funding from the RDN’s Watershed Protection Group and the Pacific Salmon Foundation, new maps of our local creeks showing tributaries and fish habitat areas have been produced and shared with end users, including the Town. The mapping was carried out by Astraea Consulting with support from QBS volunteers. Click the following links to view these maps:
And, now for some really good news, QBS volunteer Mark Hogg spotted Coho salmon above the Hoy Lake Road culvert, which represents the first time we have seen Coho in the upper reaches of the creek for decades. We believe that recent changes to the pool below the two culverts have raised the water level and allowed fish access.
