Twenty fourth year Vancouver Island University (VIU) students from the Geography 452 course – Applications in Sustainable Management visited the Little Qualicum River Estuary Conservation Area (LQRECA) on Monday, March 3 to learn about an example of a multi stakeholder ecological restoration project.
Under the leadership of Professor Matt Bowes, the class joined several Qualicum Beach Streamkeepers (QBS) and Brianna Lawrence from the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) to walk over the area, hear about the challenges, explore how the many players work together, and see the results of the replanting program.
The group completed the field day visit by carrying out for recycling several dozen rotting wood posts and beams used to build temporary enclosures to protect plants from rabbit damage. The assistance was greatly appreciated!
